The state government is giving priority to civil servants in applying for the state’s affordable housing scheme, said state Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.
He said the Selection Process Enhancement Committee (SPEC) would include the state’s 4,178 civil servants in their priority list of applications for low-cost, low medium-cost and affordable homes.
The SPEC, set up in August 2013, comprises eight elected representatives including Jagdeep himself as chairman.
“The interest and welfare of civil servants are our priority.
“The list also includes the disabled (OKU), single parents, senior citizens, talent groups, those who are issued with eviction orders or have to relocate due to flood mitigation and road upgrading projects,” he told a press conference at Komtar yesterday.
Jagdeep said under the Budget 2016 as announced by the Federal Government, a total of 100,000 houses between RM90,000 and RM300,000 would be built under 1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme (PPA1M) by 2018 in the country.
“However, the state government has not been informed of any PPA1M project to be carried out here.
“We look at the matter seriously as Penang has 4,178 civil servants. We hope the Federal Government will not turn a blind eye to these projects as it will affect the civil servants here.
“This is similar to the 1Malaysia People’s Housing Project (PR1MA),” he said, referring to the many announcements by PR1MA over the past years but there had not been any units built in the state to date.
On another matter, Jagdeep said the state had given out a total of RM47.42mil in bonus to civil servants since 2008.
He said the state would continue this year with RM5.22mil expected to be given out on Dec 18.
He added that he would also propose to either the developers or state government to come up with a housing project meant only for civil servants. - By The Star
