Sanmina SCI Sarawak axed 800 workers on 1-Nov-12.

Penang FIZ has very high content of electronics manufacturing.

The retrenchment wave may highly possible come to Penang.

Alan, can you tell us what do you actually want to share bo? Why sometimes you said everywhere is growing, sometimes everywhere layoff.......some more scolding people for sharing recession prediction on 25/Oct......very confusing le. So, finally it's growing or not?
Why don't you share with us where can we get cheaper properties or offers stuff better still, since everyone in this blog is looking for that, we don't really appreciate people get jobless.

Let's see how long the bubble can last ...

As demand falls, Penang plants cut jobs and production

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 13 ― Falling global demand has forced Penang factories to freeze hiring, cut production and implement four-day weeks, even as analysts predicted Malaysia’s economy grew slower in the third quarter.

The Malaysian Insider understands that factories in Penang, the country’s main electronics manufacturing hub, have stopped hiring, and are not even replacing those who have retired or resigned.

Many plants have also reduced output to cut costs.

Malaysia’s economy probably grew at its slowest pace in the third quarter as exports fell, but resilient domestic demand, partly fuelled by government spending ahead of an election next year, helped shore up expansion, according to a Reuters poll.

Exports account for roughly 60 per cent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product, and these have been hurt by weaker demand for commodities and electronic components in China as well as the European Union.

The hardest hit would be the electronics sector due to the drop in global demand. “For the time being, many of these companies are still able to sustain their business until the end of this year,” said Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers’ Datuk O.K. Lee.

The hardest hit would be the electronics sector due to the drop in global demand but Lee said other industries are also similarly affected as the manufacturing sector relies heavily on exports.

“Some of the factories are not working at full capacity now and due to the gloomy global economic outlook, many are also holding back on investments and adopting the wait and see method,” he said.

Some industry insiders noted that several multinationals are offering voluntary separation schemes to its employees but are careful to keep this hushed up.

”These are big MNCs so they have to be careful to protect their reputation but these are not huge numbers of VSS in any one company but small numbers spread out over the months so as not to raise any alarm ,” one industry official said.

Even as factories cut down production and output, working hours were also reduced and overtime slashed.

A factory manager said it has been several months since the factory workers were told to work four-day weeks

If you look at my post, my Alan starts with a capital A. I believe this 'alan' guy is the same guy as 'lim' because their profile both created in May 2011.

I think he's one of the poor souls that missed out on the housing boom and wants the house prices to fall. Really so naive...

November 13, 2012 at 7:21 PMAlan

My Alan starts with a capital A. This 'alan' guy I think is the same guy as 'lim' as they both post about the same jobs losses all the time and both their profiles created in May 2011.

I think he missed out on the property boom and wants the prices to fall so that he can buy. Poor soul doesn't understand supply and demand and market liquidity. Just let him be...

That is the difference.

Writing facts vs venting personal emotion.

Economy should be analyzed through comparative perspective but not absolute perspective.

5% growth in the current quarter and then followed by 2% growth in the subsequent quarter does make a disaster to a country.

November 15, 2012 at 3:44 PMsokohaw

Really sorry lah, shooting the wrong guy....Alan.
Come back to "alan", you can keep on analyzing the economy and sharing jobless info.....nothing wrong with that. We just wonder why you want to do so in this blog? Can you share with us what's your intention? Who knows one day you tell us Apple & Samsung also got layoff, at least
we know how to react ma.......pls keep us updated, ok?

The financially troubled Renesas Electronics, a Japanese computer chip maker, revealed on Thursday that it would be eliminating another 3,000 jobs as part of its ongoing cost-cutting measures. Adding to the more than 10,000 job cuts already planned.

June 18, 2013 at 7:05 PMalan

Small scale of retrenchment already started in FIZ.

June 19, 2013 at 4:07 PMsokohaw

Wah! "alan", after nearly 1 year never hear from u....but u still come back with the same statements. Don't u know things changed? With or whithout your reminder, there is no more heat in the subsale market liau(especially luxury condo)....price just shoot up too fast, the real buyers also tak boleh tahan. Share with u a secret of mine, my next door is a 3400sqft new semiD with 1.8M price tag(in Minden Heights), also got stuck since early 2011......do u think ~2000sqft condo with >1.5M can sell in this region???(Eg. Platino, Light Point etc.) Where to find so many millionaire workers or Tauke?

March 31, 2014 at 4:28 PMcondomana

@ooi kuan

Hahaha....after all these years, still didn't manage to sell this unit?

March 31, 2014 at 4:56 PMUnknown

It is not same and is 5 star hotel design~ thanks

March 31, 2014 at 5:26 PMcondomana

@ooi kuan

Well, some speculators are very strange, thinking that the more renovation they put in, the easier they can sell their units, but not realizing that the problem is not in the interior deco, it's in the price, stupid!!

When speculators put in more and more money to renovate, they have to raise the selling price, and essentially cornering themselves into a dead end....:)

If I were a genuine house buyer looking to buy for own stay, I'd be buying an empty unit so that i can renovate it to my taste and character. 5-star hotel design? without the 5-star room service and the 5-star hospitality? You've got to be kidding yourself!...:D

March 31, 2014 at 9:24 PMPenang Fan

Condomana

You should stop calling others stupid. You are entitle to your opinion and so does others. How much they think their condo is worth is their opinion. It's between willing seller and buyer. You cannot judge them?

By the way who are you to judge? Your name calling is uncall for and only reflect on your bad up bringing.

Just my opinion!

April 1, 2014 at 12:35 AMcondomana

@Penang Fan

Eehh...ok. I'll stop calling others stupid. So what's the common term that you would use to address someone with below average intelligence? Someone who thinks he can turn his platino studio unit right beside the teacher's quarters and a mosque into Four Seasons Hotel?....:D..Hahahaha.....laugh until tummy ache!!...Hahahaha

April 1, 2014 at 8:44 AMPenang Fan

The Platino studio was offered 980K but was turned down because owner will not accept anything less. Owner sees it value as only 1 such unit for each block. A rare condo indeed. Those who called others stupid are no better. Calling others stupid shows insecurity and has inferiority complex. Ask any Psychologist and he will tell you that.

@Penang Fan

Good luck with your Four Seasons Hotel in the factory zone!....:) adios amigo!
