Taman Manggis housing proposal replaced in 2005

A proposed People’s Housing Project (PPR) on the remaining 0.5ha plot in Taman Manggis here was replaced with a proposal for a mixed development project in 2005, documents to be declassified Wednesday reveal.

State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo (pic) told a press conference here that the documents would be made public after they are declassified by the state executive council at its meeting on Tuesday.

He said an earlier July 2003 proposal to build a 14-storey block with 160 PPR units on the plot was replaced in 2005 by a proposal for a mixed development project made up of government quarters and shophouses.

The state government had earlier been criticised for selling the plot to a private company for a hospital and hotel project although the land had been allocated for low-cost housing.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng subsequently said the state government had no knowledge that the plot had been earmarked for low-cost housing, and had decided to offer the land for a specialist hospital project to encourage medical tourism. - The Star
