Whimsical display of vintage beauties

The classic cars on display at the EcoWorld Gallery @ Eco Meadows in Simpang Ampat in mainland Penang have been drawing in the crowds.

On weekends and holidays, visitors flock to snap photos with the nine Mini Coopers and one Volkswagen Beetle which are each dressed up with a quirky twist.

Among the admirers of the classic beauties were lorry driver Mohd Faizal Zainol, 30, and entrepreneur wife Nur Shatila Wan Chik, 26.

The couple brought along their two-year-old daughter Putri Nur Arissa and three nieces.

They were especially attracted to the Mini Cooper depicting ghosts from the Pac-Man arcade game seemingly about to be eaten by a voracious yellow character.

“We saw people posting about it in Facebook and decided to come snap some photos of our own.

“Being a vintage car enthusiast, I think it is beautiful,” Mohd Faizal said when met at the site recently.

Also favourites with the visitors was a Mini Cooper dressed up in the guise of a brawny weightlifter and another with an armchair and teddy bear on its roof referencing an episode from the Mr Bean comedy series.

Another two of the British-made cars — which were loaned from collectors and dressed up with vinyl stickers and cutouts — played the role of star-crossed lovers in front of an arch of red hearts.

The lovebirds drew the attention of housewife Nursyahida Rahim, 29, and her 10-month-old son Ahmad Faezal Zain Izwan Zainureen.

While all the Mini Coopers are parked inside the project site, the equally colourful Beetle can be seen at the entrance along Jalan Paboi.

The display of cars started last month as part of EcoWorld’s Drive Into A New Year festive celebrations.

It will run until this Sunday and is open from 10am to 6pm daily. Entrance is free for all visitors.

Those visiting on weekends can also get a free car wash by registering on site with the last call at 5pm.

Visitors are also invited to check out the sales gallery featuring the developer’s various verdant developments as well as the show units for Eco Meadows.
