Residents in Taman Sri Rambai and Taman Lau Geok Swee in Paya Terubong, Penang, will stage a public protest tomorrow against a proposed hillslope development behind their semi-detached homes.
Having to contend with muddy roads every time there’s a downpour since 2013, the residents recently had to grapple with rock blasting work as well.
“Our roads were littered with blast debris. I cannot understand how the authorities could allow the developer to do rock blasting just behind our homes,” said resident Tan Kwee Lim.
A rock flew onto the roof of Tan’s semi-detached house during the blasting in early September, smashing several tiles on impact.
The residents are also taking Paya Terubong assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin to task for not meeting the residents since they began objecting to the development.
Yeoh could not be reached for comment.
“We are disappointed with Yeoh because he never showed up in our meetings. He only sent city council officers and members from the local Village Development and Security Committee. We voted him in but he doesn’t come when we need him,” said Tan.
Another resident Dr L.G. Ti, who has been appointed as the spokesman for the residents, said they had also objected to the access roads proposed for the new project which would cut through their residential estate.
“Our homes shook when they blew the hillslope apart. We are going to fight to the end to stop the project,” he said. - By The Star
