Applicants for low and low medium-cost (LMC) housing in Penang who have been twice offered units but rejected both offers will now have to re-apply and be listed as per the latest application date.
State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the new ruling was introduced by the Selection Process Enhancement Committee (SPEC) on Tuesday as there were 31,205 people on the waiting list.
“One reason for the long list is because of people who reject offers on numerous occasions, thereby causing their names to continue to be on top of the list.
“Those who applied after them continue to be down on the list,” he told a press conference in George Town, Penang.
Jagdeep Singh said some who applied in 1979 were still on the waiting list because they kept rejecting the offered units.
“There are some who have rejected the offer almost 10 times,” he said.
Jagdeep Singh said those who were evicted to make way for public projects or applicants with disabled family members were given priority to overtake others on the list.
He said 1,118 units were available for allotment to applicants.
He added that the state government and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) had proposed several affordable housing projects to commence in between five and 15 years from now.
“In total, some 19,866 units ranging from RM72,500 to RM400,000 per unit have been proposed by the state and PDC. More projects will be proposed in the coming future,” he said.
