Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will explore the possibility of having low-cost flats built for residents in Kampung Ujong Batu, Bagan Dalam.
He said some of the wooden and partially concrete houses there were dilapidated, adding that the residents had been living in pathetic conditions for many years.
“I will see if a one-for-one replacement housing scheme could be considered for the 400-odd families here.
“I will discuss with our state exco to look into the possibility of building low-cost flats to meet the needs of the residents here.
“However, I will first need feedback and co-operation from all residents in the neighbourhood to make this proposal work,” he said after visiting Kampung Ujong Batu on Mon-day.
Lim, who retained the Bagan parliamentary constituency which encompasses the Bagan Dalam state constituency, visited almost all houses to personally thank the residents for supporting him and DAP’s Bagan Dalam incumbent A. Tanasekharan, who retained his seat in Sunday’s polls.
Now that the polls are over, Lim said, the people should put their political differences aside and work together with the state government to have their living conditions improved.
“The Pakatan Rakyat government helps people irrespective of race, religion and political belief.
“Even if a person supports Barisan Nasio-nal, we will respect the person’s voting right and continue to help him or her, just as we help others without any discrimination,” he said.
He stressed that after receiving the people’s mandate and trust to lead the state administration for the next five years, Pakatan bore the responsibility to work for the people. - By DERRICK VINESH (The Star)
