The former Penang Turf Club land on Jesselton Road will not be re-zoned from mixed development to recreational status as it would require the state to come out with a large compensation package, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
He said the area was converted to mixed development land under the previous Barisan Nasional state government in 2007.
“Those who are affected by the reduction in land value — stake holders or land owners — can claim compensation from the state if we go ahead with the re-zoning,” Lim said.
Yesterday, the Consumers Association of Penang urged the state to re-zone the former turf club land back to recreational status to protect the area from “unnecessary development”.
It was reported that Berjaya Land Development Sdn Bhd, who purchased the 23ha land plot for RM459mil, had proposed the construction of bungalows, semi-detached houses, condominiums and apartment units in the area. - By The Star
