The Penang Municipal Council has issued a stop-work order to GLM Property Development Sdn Bhd, the developer of the upmarket Surin Bolton Apartments, for carrying out rock blasting at a hillslope in Tanjung Bungah here.
Another developer Taman Ratu Developers Sdn Bhd, which is developing the Beverly Hills hillslope project nearby, suffered a similar fate for allegedly not following procedures in carrying out soil stabilisation work.
Council president Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman said the action was taken after the council received numerous complaints from residents nearby.
“Residents fear the rock-blasting activities at the construction site of Surin Bolton apartments might cause structural problems to their buildings. “On the Beverly Hills project, we suspect the developer might not have followed the procedures in carrying out soil stabilisation works.
“This is because residents spotted trees falling at the site,” he told reporters after chairing a council meeting at City Hall yesterday.
He was commenting on the statement by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Sunday that the state government had issued stop-work orders on two developments projects in Tanjung Bungah.
Zainal Rahim said the council’s engineers, together with officers from the Mineral and Geo-science Department, had been sent to conduct site inspections.
He said state Local Government, Traffic Management and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow was expected to call for a meeting soon with all the relevant authorities to provide a solution to the matter.
Among those expected to be present are the independent panel of engineering advisers and representatives from the council, state Public Works Department, developers and residents.
The Surin Bolton Apartments comprise 396 units of sea-view condos. The Beverly Hills project will have terrace homes, semi-detached residences, bungalows and condominiums. - The Star
