Work on the RM500mil Warisan Tanjung medium-cost apartment project to replace wooden village houses in Kampung Tanjung Tokong in Penang will kick off by April next year.
Its developer UDA Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan said 80% of the residents there supported the project.
He said the company was in the final stages of negotiating with the remaining 20%.
“Most of the 1,000 families are eager to temporarily move out to allow us to start work on the apartment project, following several fires and flooding cases in the village.
“Construction work on the apartment project will take 24 months,” he told reporters at UDA Holdings’ Hari Raya open house at Dewan Milenium in Kepala Batas on Thursday.
Jaafar said the project involved the construction of nine blocks of 900 low-rise apartments.
He said 241 families would be relocated under the first of three relocation phases, of which 180 families would move into transit houses, while rental subsidy would be given to the remaining 61 families to rent houses elsewhere.
He said all families would each receive an apartment unit free of charge. The project includes a multi-purpose hall and reading room.
“We are offering discounts of up to 45% to tenants in the village to buy housing units in the project,” he said.
UDA Holdings chairman Datuk Hilmi Abdul Rashid said as a government-linked company (GLC), UDA was committed to helping the residents obtain better deal from the development.
“We will synergise the apartment project with its surroundings, which are part of Penang’s beachfront tourism belt.
He said they had discussed the matter with the state government and had received positive feedback.
Yang diPertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Perda chairman Datuk Azhar Ibrahim and several dignitaries were among the VIPs at the event.
