The Penang Municipal Council is looking into implementing profitable projects on its 4.4ha plot of prime land in Jalan S.P. Chelliah.
Council president Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman (pic) said such projects would benefit the council as well as society.
“We have to look into projects that will give us long-term benefits.
“This particular piece of land has vast commercial potential as it is strategically located near the inner city.
“We will carefully study the future development concept for this piece of land before making any decision,” he said after opening the MPPP Enforcement Day and the new RM3.3mil enforcement building at Jalan Kampung Jawa Baru on Saturday.
Zainal said this when asked to comment on Komtar assemblyman Datuk Lim Gim Soon’s call to the council to build more low-cost houses to cater to the needs of low-income earners.
“There is no doubt the council has a social obligation to provide low-cost housing and public amenities,” Zainal said.
But the council, he said, also had to look into long-term strategies to implement projects that would strengthen its financial standing to enable it to provide better services to ratepayers.
Zainal said the council had received proposals to build an auto city and commercial lots in the area.
“But we have not made any decision yet. We also did not set any time frame to develop this particular piece of prime land.
“However, we have demolished two blocks of old quarters in the area. Soon, we will demolish the remaining two blocks,” he said. - By The Star
