Gurney Drive roundabout beautification project sponsored by IJM Properties

A new stainless steel sculpture adorned with round polycarbonate lighting and featuring cascading water will welcome visitors.

The sculpture with the theme ‘wave and birds’ will feature curvy metal poles depicting the waves with a few bird-shaped carvings.

The lighting will glow in the night and the structure will be surrounded with spraying water jets.

Sponsored by IJM Properties Sdn Bhd, the RM498,608 beautification project will also include a surrounding mounded surface planted with turfing (Zoysia japonica) and a sloping concrete driveway curb at the lower part.

Penang Municipal Council development planning, landscaping, beautification and re-creation committee alternate chairman Foong Kai Choong said the project was approved in August and work started about 10 days ago.

“We studied a few proposals from various companies interested in sponsoring the roundabout beautification project.

“The committee picked this as we find the sculpture really attractive and suitable for Gurney Drive,” he added.

Foong said the roundabout had already been fenced up for the construction work and the workers were currently planting the grass and building the elevated base.

“They will install the sculpture as soon as the work is done.

“We will continue to study proposals from interested sponsors and if there are any suitable ones, we will also beautify other roundabouts,” he said. - By The Star
